I can feel my lips still when I played this years ago in high school on Euphonium but boy was it fun!
Auburn Senior high school 2014-15. ❤
Something about 6:15 onward is genuinely unnerving and spooky.
My college band (Winona State University) played this for our spring concert this year! I will say that no recording will ever live up to what it feels like to sit in the middle of the band with this playing around you, but I will never get tired of listening to the recording!
Chills, chills!

I played this with my university's symphonic band. Wow I love it
Tuba player here. This was a dream of mine to perform.
Got to play this on Bari Sax with about 150 other musicians in 2001 as part of the Harvard Summer Pops Band. Incredible experience.
Lutheran Summer Music 1998 I was participating in a performance of this work .
1:36 4:00
I remember my top high school concert band playing this my freshman year and thinking “...WOAH”
This is hands down the best version of this piece of music. It leaves me speechless..
Got to play this twice in two different bands! So much fun playing this
I was also supposed to play it... But covid😑
It's so badass I just can't comprehend it. Like I need to perform this man!
Holy mother of god this is one of the most badass things I’ve ever heard.
We played this in high school, 1995-ish. LOVED that piece!
We played this the same year. Great memories.
Bass clarinet 😁😁😁😁🙋🏾♀️🙋🏾♀️
I’m playing the bass clarinet too. Nice piece
可是瑞凡,類神經網路感知機是1957年就提出ㄌ

okay i can't be the only one at 5:40 ish that thinks the effect created by the sax and trombone (i think??) sounds like.. smell. like disgusting scent, as if gollum/smeagol smell absolutely rank and that part of the music illustrates that.
To me it represents Gollum's dual personalities, when they debate each other. The Slinker and the Stinker, as Sam would say.
@@Xerxes2005 i actually know nothing about lotr so idrk about dual personalities but i can hear it :)
I always thought this is the more [if not the most] sinister movement of the entire symphony.
I feel honored to play the snare drum part in my first ever Wind Ensemble concert TONIGHT! (October 24, 2019) so good
same here
This piece helped me through those long nights of being a music major. I absolutely adore it!
I love the Hobbit music at 1:25
You know.....after listening to this orchestra version, i can not enjoy the wind band version again.......those strings really add more power and weight into the piece
Played the 2nd chair trumpet part in marching band and it was great being able to do the harmony! Love it!
3:57 I kinda don't like how they orchestrated this Hymn section. It just losses the natural color and characteristics of a Hymn. I prefer the original Wind band version.
wtf this sounded too good. i mean...this one is legit the best recording of lotr 1st symphony 1.gandalf. still gimme chills up to these days. i seen the piece and tried playing this before. but sadly, not with the whole orchestra :(
I played this and Johan de Meij guest-conducted it.
Auburn Sypmhonic?
Its not often I miss playing my trombone, but when I do I think of this piece and of Hobbits as well. I get teary and remember that magical part of my life when music was more important then breathing.
Shoutout to all of those who got jumpscared at 2:14 first time they listened to this.
Clarinettttttt
This piece is bad ass, playing this for concert band and it is the greatest challenge I've had as a clarinet player ever since playing Tchaikovsky symphony no. 4!!! Great piece and scored very well!
dope!
I have more nightmares from playing trumpet @3:50 than from Gollum himself...
every night I am haunted by those nightmares
What a wonderful cor anglais solo :)
0:55 Trombone 1 chills with that high f sharp.
1:31-2:01... da-yum
beautiful
fuck yeah trumpets
OMG!!!! Give me the Trumpet!!!
since everyone is leaving their instrument....oboeeeeee
lol trumpet :p
2nd the oboe
Oboe yay my fav
Bass clarinet
Alto Clarinet!
Pretty sure this theme is borrowed for finding Luke Skywalker at the end of the force awakens
Pretty sure this was composed 3 decades before the film.
That's not what i said. This theme was borrowed FROM gandalf and used for swtfa
I don't hear it. The scene is on UA-cam if you want to listen. There are parts that have similar harmonies but none of the melodic content is the same.
more magical than the movie
Percussion am I right
Eduardo falu
5:22 my eyesight must be going bad - the two hobbits look like rap artists with raybans on
cornet 2. very very nice
I played trombone 1 for all of this. Quite an amazing musical experience. One I won't forget.
Damn right
I really want to play it, but I doubt my school will find money to buy it, let alone the orchestra director humor me enough to even include it in concert...
Same here. Absolutely beautiful piece that I'll never forget.
did both Trombone 2, then Euph part the next year :'3
I played this in grade 11 as a flute. rip flute players. hahaha
i played trumpet 4 for this song XD loved every bit of it
